TV Interactions With Social Media

T.V Shows now have a new way of interacting with their audiences! TV shows such as This Morning, X factor, Britain's Got Talent, The Only Way Is Essex, Hollyoaks and Made in Chelsea encourage interaction whilst the shows are being aired. All the shows stated and many more all have there own personal pages on the channels which broadcast the shows; but they also have their own social media pages such as Facebook and Twitter. Hollyoaks Facebook pages give teasers of what might be happening on the show. This then allows the fans to interact and comment and guess what may be happening. The social media pages also have quizzes and competitions continuously to keep fans engaged. The Hollyoaks page also give tasters of characters who may be re-appearing  and ask their fans if this is something they would want to see. For example the return of a previous character Josh Ashworth.

They also give idea's of other characters that could reappear and the drama in the shows that could result from this. This type of interact helps keep the fans engaged with the show and helps maintain or even gain more viewers.  


Twitter helps gets shows trending. For example ‏@AleshaOfficial tweeted "@bgtpress: The final of #BGT drew a massive peak audience of 14.5m (13.8m ex+1) - the highest peak audience of 2012 Whoop whoop!!!" Has Alesha is one of the main judges on the this TV shows which dominates the air waves while broadcasting; the interaction with fans allows them to feel involved. Fans are able to retweet/quote this comment she may made or reply back. The hashtag #BGT allows people to see what other people from around the world to see what options and thoughts of others.This is a different platform from Facebook as it allows interaction one on one with the main presenters but also allows people to access and read comments more easy.




TV shows need social media as its different platform of communication. The uses and gratification theory from Katz and Blumler state that individuals psychological needs to be actively seeking to have that sense of belonging, identity, knowlage and escapism with the TV shows.
